OmniTRANS Realtime

Better accessibility and sustainable mobility through proactive traffic management

The construction of new roads or widening of existing ones has long since ceased to be the sole solution to improving accessibility. We need to make smarter use of current road capacity and ensure that the existing road network can deal with the volume of traffic more efficiently. That's not just beneficial in terms of cost, but also ties in better with the transition to more sustainable, liveable cities.

Smarter ways of using data and modelling are key to helping achieve these goals. With OmniTRANS Realtime, traffic management can be proactive rather than reactive - really improving accessibility and making mobility more sustainable. The tool does this by continuously providing a complete overview of traffic densities and traffic flow speeds for the entire road network, using real-time data from inductive loops, intelligent traffic control systems and floating car data, on the basis of which predictions are made of traffic conditions up to 60 minutes ahead.

The many features of OmniTRANS Realtime

OmniTRANS Realtime helps highway operators to continuously improve accessibility for road traffic. The tool provides the following options:

  • Proactive intervention in expected traffic conditions instead of responding to current conditions. Measures can be taken earlier so that problems are mitigated or in fact prevented from occurring.
  • Intervention in the network as a whole instead of addressing particular elements within it. Because highway operators will have a better overview of the network as a whole, they will have more options for intervening in the overall network.
  • Further flexibilisation of traffic management by introducing automatic control scenarios.
  • Immediate incident detection and action on the basis of data.
  • Analysis and optimisation of traffic management measures. Because conditions are better understood due to the availability of more data, highway operators are better equipped to provide an appropriate response. Even in unknown situations where traditional know-how falls short due to significantly changed conditions.

We intend taking OmniTRANS Realtime a notch up in the near future by enabling measures to be assessed real-time before they are implemented. This will create even more time to consider and coordinate measures.

The effects of OmniTRANS Realtime in actual practice

On the roads, using OmniTRANS Realtime will ensure that:

  • Tailbacks are prevented rather than remedied
  • Expected journey times are estimated more accurately
  • The most efficient route choice is shown
  • Rush-hour lanes are used more efficiently
  • Bridge opening times are factored into determining traffic disruptions
  • Time-coordinated “green” for all smart traffic control systems

What makes OmniTRANS Realtime so special?

On top of the many options provided, OmniTRANS Realtime boasts a number of features that make it a unique and distinct tool:

  • It uses real-time data on densities and speeds instead of just historical data.
  • By combining real-time data and modelling, the tool can provide information about different types of situations, even if they have never occurred before. Data points that are inconsistent are smoothed out by the modelling approach.
  • The combination of real-time data and modelling allows predictions to be made for the next 10 to 30 minutes with a high level of reliability. It is even possible to make predictions up to 60 minutes ahead.
  • OmniTRANS Realtime does  recalculations every minute  so as to provide as reliable a picture as possible.

OmniTRANS Realtime can be used as a decision-making support tool in a traffic control system, but also to manage fully automated trigger-based control scenarios. Proactive instead of reactive traffic management is the key to ensuring accessibility in today's ever busier environment.
